Who is Susan Mikula?

Susan Mikula is an American artist and photographer. Mikula serves on the art jury too. In 1998, she held her first solo photography exhibition.

Mikula not only uses older technology to produce her photograph but among her tools are pinhole cameras and Polaroid cameras.

Also, Susan Mikula’s focal point of interest is to capture the movement of light and time.

Not surprisingly her 2013 series, u.X, were inspired by the Lascaux cave paintings in France.

She is also known as the girlfriend of popular television host, author, and political commentator Rachel Maddow.

Who are the parents of Susan Mikula?

Susan Mikula was born on 7th March 1958, in New Jersey, United States. She was then taken to live in New Hampshire when very young and was brought up there.

Of her father, Mikula recalls “My dad had an incredible eye for photography and briefly worked in documentary and wedding photography while he was learning how to be a pilot.”

Susan Mikula has a sister who is a medical photographer, and both are of French-Native North American ancestry.

Education

At an early age, Susan Mikula taught herself photography and was under tutelage for some time where she learned the ropes.

Susan Mikula then graduated from Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, US.

Susan Mikula: Profession, Career

Susan Mikula is self-taught herself to shoot through her SX-70 Polaroid camera- the last known Polaroid was produced in 2007 more or less.

Her style of photography softens the edges and strips away details to reveal the underlying shape and feel of her shoot. Susan explains that photography is how she sees, thinks, and speaks.

For inspiration, Susan Mikula looks up to Julian Schnabel, and Joan Mitchell, and some of her local influences include Maggie Mailer, Charlie Hunter, and T.J. Walton.

Susan Mikula explains that some of her 2013 series, u.X, was inspired by the  Lascaux cave paintings, also called the Grotte de Lascaux, in Montignac, Dordogne, South-West France.

These caves in France are an element of the Prehistoric Sites and Decorated Caves of the Vézère Valley.
