- In the early days, most of the moviemaking patents were in the hands of Thomas Edison’s company and were in New Jersey. Filmmakers would get sued by the company if they could not complete the production due to any reason. To avoid these, the filmmakers started moving to the West where enforcements were difficult.
There was a ranch called Hollywood owned by Harvey and Daeida where the present industry is situated. Hence, this location got the name Hollywood and the film world became Hollywood!
- The first film to be made in Hollywood was in 1910 and called as ‘In Old California’. The duration of this film was 17 minutes and was directed by D.W. Griffith.
- Before 1910, no movie theaters to screen the films were present in Hollywood and were banned. The first movie theater to come up in Hollywood was the Nestor Studio. Centaur Co. of New Jersey had set it up in a rented roadhouse in 1911.
- Four brothers from Ohio dealing with soaps began a studio in Hollywood in the year 1918 and named their venture Warner Bros. It is famous to date and is one of the biggest producers of films in Hollywood.
- The sign ‘HOLLYWOODLAND’ was put up by real estate owner Harry Chandler in 1923 when he was advertising properties around the area. Costing him $ 21000 to get it up there, the sign was meant to be there for only 18 months but was continued beyond. Later on, LAND was removed and only the term HOLLYWOOD remained. It has since become a major landmark in the industry. There has also been some tragedy associated with this huge landmark. The Broadway star Peg Entwistle had jumped off the ‘H’ and committed suicide from it.
- The most costly movie made to date in Hollywood is ‘Pirates of The Caribbean: At World’s End. It cost $ 300 million to make while it made a profit amounting to a billion dollars!
- The Academy Awards or Oscars was first held in Hotel Hollywood Roosevelt in 1929. 270 people attended and 15 awards were given away. It was followed by an after-party as a tradition.
- There are only one species of frog in Hollywood that croaks to produce the sound effects in films.
- There is also a large group of feral chickens who live under a freeway in Hollywood. They have been there since the 1970s. No one knows how these chickens reached there and various attempts to dislodge them have been unsuccessful.
- In the 1930s, Hollywood permitted the German Government to censor the films in the US as well in case they felt that the film was unflattering to the Nazis or is against Germany as a country.
