The special lead singer Terry Hall is no longer with us. His band announced his death on December 19, 2022, through The Special’s Instagram citing his death reason to be a brief illness.
It wrote,
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing, following a brief illness, of Terry, our beautiful friend, brother and one of the most brilliant singers, songwriters and lyricists this country has ever produced. Terry was a wonderful husband and father and one of the kindest, funniest, and most genuine of souls.”
Hall who formed The Specials in 1977 had been the lead vocalist for a few years and only reunited with the band in 2008. He only left the band upon his death while the band revealed,
“His music and his performances encapsulated the very essence of life… the joy, the pain, the humour, the fight for justice, but mostly the love. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him and leaves behind the gift of his remarkable music and profound humanity. “
The statement concluded with the surviving band members of The Specials With whom Hall recently released Encore in 2019, writing,
“Terry often left the stage at the end of The Specials’ life-affirming shows with three words… ‘Love Love Love”. We would ask that everyone respect the family’s privacy at this very sad time.?”
Terry Hall before his death had talked about how the pandemic affected his mental health. He also continued to explain how the comeback to the band was brought to a halt.
“The arrival of the pandemic affected me enormously. I spent around three months trying to figure out what was going on. I couldn’t write a single word. I spent the time trying to figure out how not to die.”
