Tom Holland talks about his struggles and being sober
Tom Holland is getting candid about his internal struggles and said that he has been sober for one year and four months.
The Spiderman: No Way Home actor revealed that his upcoming project The Crowded Room played a big role in making him understand his own triggers.
In the most recent show, Holland plays Danny Sullivan – a young man who happens to land himself in trouble accidentally after being arrested for something he did not do.
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Holland said,
“Learning about mental health and the power of it, and speaking to psychiatrists about Danny’s struggles, has been something that has been so informative to my own life,”
The young actor also spoke to psychiatrists in order to make him understand his character better.
The 26-year-old actor explained,
“I’m no stranger to the physical aspects of the job doing the whole action movie thing,”
“But the mental aspect, it really beat me up, and it tool a long time for me to recover afterward, to sort of get back to reality.”

Tom stepped away from social media to protect his mental health
After months of giving himself to the character, Holland knew it was time to detach himself from it for the sake of protecting his mental health.
The Uncharted actor added,
“I was seeing myself in him, but in my personal life, I remember having a bit of a meltdown at home and thinking, like, ‘I’m going to shave my head. I need to shave my head, because I need to get rid of this character,’”
“And, obviously, we were mid-shooting, so I decided not to. It was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before.”
After experiencing something of that sort, Tom hopes the audience will “have more respect and more sympathy for people who are going through mental health issues.”
He added,
“I hope that people will feel educated about the powers of mental health, the struggles, [and] our incredible abilities to survive,”
A year ago, Tom revealed that he was taking a break from social media platforms to focus on his mental health.
He shared a video with his 67 million followers, saying,
“I find Instagram and Twitter to be overstimulating, to be overwhelming,”
“I get caught up and I spiral when I read things about me online and ultimately it’s very detrimental to my mental state. So I decided to take a step back and delete the app.”
