The current situation in Ukraine is miserable after Russia invaded the country on 24 February. Miss Ukraine 2018 Veronika Didusenko was also forced to flee the country with her 7-year-old son last week.
On Tuesday, she was joined by attorney Gloria Allred during the press conference in Los Angeles on International Women’s Day. She shared her horrible journey at a news conference describing seeing an air battle over her head.
She said,
“Directly above my head, dozens of helicopters with their troops were bombing … as I was fleeing with my young son, I could see there was a real air battle above our head,”
The former Miss Ukraine added,
“On my… journey to the border of Ukraine, there was no place where sirens would not sound, where rockets and bombs would not explode.”
Didusenko made it to Moldova after a slow drive to Ukraine’s western border with thousands of cars causing massive traffic jams. As the country came under attack due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. She then passes through three countries Romania, Luxembourg, and Switzerland with her son.
Her son’s visa had been denied, so she was the only one who made the trip to Los Angeles. The former Miss Ukraine leave her son with friends in Geneva, Switzerland.
How did Veronika Didusenko and Gloria Allred know each other?
Allred and Didusenko met over the internet in January, and the pair had planned to hold a news conference in Los Angeles on March 8 to mark International Women’s Day.
During a press conference, Allred said “after Russian invasion began I assumed Didusenko would not be making the trip, but she made ‘what seemed to be impossible, possible’.”
The two spoke out in support of Ukrainian women. Disusenko addressed the current situation of women in Ukraine.
“Right now, millions of Ukrainian children and their mothers are traveling… [to] the subway stations and bomb shelter. Even more heartbreaking, women are giving birth in such conditions in these shelters. Right now, Russian [airplanes], missiles and multiple rocket launchers continue to strike at dozens of Ukrainian cities.”

Disusenko also joined Allred in calling on President Joe Biden. She makes a request to the U.S. president to give Ukrainians the opportunity to come to the U.S., “if they so choose,” without a visa.
Allred also added,
“Europe is doing what it can, but we must step up as well. Today is International Women’s Day, and the time for urgent action is now.”
