Warren’s company makes huge profits
Warren Buffett’s company had reported that it has made better earnings than expected. His company has 54.1 million shares of IBM.
Due to the 8.9 percent surge in IBM shares, he has made nearly $ 800 million through these shares. He had not much liked having IBM’s share.
But he told CNBC that his initial appraisal of IBM was wrong. He said:
“I was wrong … IBM is a big strong company, but they’ve got big strong competitors too. I don’t value IBM the same way that I did six years ago when I started buying … I’ve revalued it somewhat downward.”
Since the purchase of the shares by Warren’s company, this leap was the biggest for them. Warren is, of course, happy about it.

Warren’s battle with prostate cancer
Warren is one of the wealthiest men in America. But he had suffered a health scare in 2012. Warren had announced in April 2012 that he has been diagnosed with stage 1 prostate cancer.
He had no symptoms and it was only a blood screening test for prostate-specific antigen (PSA) that was positive. He was then checked with a bone scan, CT scan, and an MRI to see for any possible spread of cancer, which was, fortunately, all negative. It was found that his cancer is only in the prostate gland and has not spread anywhere.
He told:
“The good news is that I’ve been told by my doctors that my condition is not remotely life-threatening or even debilitating in any meaningful way. I feel great –as if I were in my normal excellent health –and my energy level is 100 percent,”
His travel was affected due to the diagnosis but not his routines. He opted for a two-month radiation course which is considered minimally invasive and effective for prostate cancer.
Warren started the therapy at Nebraska Medical Center in mid-July 2012. He completed his radiation therapy course for prostate cancer in September 2012.
He told a leading newspaper about it:
“It’s a great day for me. Today I had my 44th and last day of radiation.”
He added:
“I’ll be feeling the side effects for a few weeks yet, but I am so glad to say that’s over.”
Warren had shared all the information related to his health issue with the tabloids in order to make people aware of his condition and also for the benefit of his shareholders.
About prostate cancer
It is cancer that arises in the prostate gland in men. This gland is a walnut-shaped gland that produces the seminal fluid which nourishes and aids in sperm transportation. It is said that 80% of the 80-year-old get this disease.
It is slowly progressive in the older age group compared to the young population. The 5-year survival rate for prostate cancer is 100%. The 10-year survival is 98%.
Warren did not have any symptoms. If there are symptoms these may include difficulty in passing urine, slow stream of urine, pelvic area discomfort, bone pain, and the like. Usually, stage 1 cancers are treated by watchful surveillance.
Treatment is only started if there is a sudden rise in tumor size. That Warren had decided to have the treatment had surprised everyone. But it is a matter of personal choice and also depends on what is the expected life expectancy and health condition of the person who gets cancer.
