  • Cameron has announced Jake’s son, Lo’ak as the new narrator for the third movie.

James Cameron fired Jake Sully as the narrator for the coming movies

James Cameron admitted on the podcast “Soundtracking With Edith Bowman” that he fired Sam Worthington‘s Jake Sully, the movie’s original narrator. Sully’s eldest son Lo’ak (Britain Dalton) will take up the reins after two films with Sully’s voice guiding us from the top of the Halleluja Mountains to the pools of Awa’atlu.

On the podcast, he said:

“I’m going to take a moment when the dust clears to assess what people loved and what they responded to the most in this current release, and then I may go back and tinker a little bit.”

Speaking of Avatar 3, Cameron said:

“We may go back and do a couple of moments here and there. It won’t be radical, but maybe fine-tune it a bit to emphasize that which people are responding to.”

He continued:

“Lo’ak really emerged as a character that people went with. So I might find ways to—he’s already the narrator. I’m giving away something here, but this is OK. I think it could be intriguing for people to think about what’s coming.”

Why did James Cameron fire Jake Sully as the narrator?

Cameron also revealed that Lo’ak will be the narrator of the third part but the latter movies will have different narrators altogether.

“Jake was our voiceover narrator for movie one and for movie two, and we have a different narrator for each of the subsequent films. We see it through the eyes of a different character. Movie three is through Lo’ak’s eyes.”

The reason for Cameron firing Jake Sully as the narrator is to see the movies from the eyes of different characters. We saw the first and second movies through the eyes of Jake but the upcoming part will be from the eyes of his son, Lo’ak.

Similarly, the fourth and fifth part of the Avatar franchise will have different narrators to see the movie from other perspectives.

What we know about Avatar 3 so far

The plot of Avatar: The Way of Water was split into two parts at one point because it was thought to be too complex for a single movie during the early stages of script production. This could imply that Avatar 3, which was produced alongside the second movie, has a stronger connection to the most recent sequel than it does to movies 4 and 5.

Cameron recently disclosed that the third film will introduce a new fire-based tribe of Na’vi dubbed the Ash People, though plot details are still limited.

The director added that Avatar 3 will flip the more obvious contrast seen in the first two movies by introducing more “evil” Na’vi and “good” humanity.

Talking about the movie to “20 Minutes”, Cameron revealed:

“There will be different cultures from those I have already shown. The fire will be represented by the ‘Ash People.’ I want to show the Na’vi from another angle because, so far, I have only shown their good sides.”

He added:

“In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Na’vi examples. In ‘Avatar 3,’ we will do the opposite. We will also explore new worlds, while continuing the story of the main characters. I can say that the last parts will be the best. The others were an introduction, a way to set the table before serving the meal.”
