Yvette Cooper, UK’s home secretary, orders review into extremism in UK society including extreme misogyny!
All forms of extremism is on the rise in the world. This has led to deaths of innocent people, mass killings, and riots. The ruling Labour Party of the UK had promised its citizens that it will put in place new strategies to counter extremism. Hence, the home secretary, Yvette Cooper has ordered a review into it.
Review of counter-extremism strategies in the UK
UK witnessed riots due to extremism recently. Harmful ideologies are rising and these are a threat to the society. These may be pro-islamist movements, far-right views, or misogynist ideologies such as the incel culture.
The ruling Labour Party had promised its citizens certain reforms. They had stated that if brought to power, they would look into and review the nation’s counter-extremism strategy and also have a strategic Defence Review, spending review and a review of the National Curriculum.
The home ministry also wants to specifically look into the growing misogynist culture such as the incel culture. Men following this ideology are involuntarily celibate and harbor hate against women and alpha men.
Yvette Cooper orders review
The home secretary, Yvette Cooper, has asked her staff to conduct a review of the current strategies in the UK as regards countering extremism of all forms. She said:
“This extremism frays the very fabric of our communities and our democracy.”
The analysis will look into why extreme misogynist beliefs are arising and spreading. It will try to gather information into how and why are young people getting radicalized. This review would attempt to map out and also monitor extremist trends. It will try to find out ways to weed them out.
The extremism ideas are growing and coming in different and new patterns. Their study would help to change laws accordingly to tackle them. Yvette added:
“We want to identify any gaps in existing policy which need to be addressed to crack down on those pushing harmful and hateful beliefs and violence.”
The last amendment to the counter-extremism strategy was done in 2015 and changes to it are long overdue in keeping with new and rising forms of extremism that has riddled the British society.
Examples of extreme misogyny and Incel culture
The government has been vocal about their concern for the growing hate against women especially online. The incel culture is that online movement that involuntarily celibate men started and who think that women and alpha men have caused them harm and are responsible for their life problems.
In 2021, Jake Davison, 22 killed five people in Plymouth before killing self. The investigation linked the shooting and killings to his incel ideology.
Unfortunately, at that time, the government took no further action against the online threads that believe in the incel culture. But it has risen enormously. There are some social media influencers such as as Andrew Tate who proclaims that he is a misogynist. And he continues to spread hate against women online.
All this needs to stop and hence this government wants to take strict action to curb this growing menace in society.
