Robert Mugabe and his last wish for burial
Robert Mugabe had a place of burial reserved at the Heroes Acre which is a North Korean-built monument. There is a reserved spot there for the grave of his wife.
But Robert has refused burial at this monument. Instead, he expressed the wish to get a burial next to his mother Bona on their family farm which is situated in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe.
A hospital spokesperson from Singapore said:
“We are saddened by the news of the passing of Mr. Robert Mugabe, former president of Zimbabwe.
‘Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to his family and loved ones. We are unable to share further, out of respect for the privacy of Mr. Mugabe and his family.’
Robert Mugabe and his regime in Zimbabwe
Robert started as a liberator but later the country fell into violence and economic crisis. He had purged several of his political enemies during his time as a President.
He rose to power in 1980 after the British rule ended in Zimbabwe. There was torture, persecution of political opponents, bloodshed, intimidation, and even vote-rigging.
All this severely and negatively affected the general public. The country is rich in minerals. But despite that, the country’s economy fell drastically. There were widespread starvation and poverty.
Hence the military of the country ousted him, the people celebrated on the streets. He had seized white-ruled land and was thus a pariah in the West.
Despite all that, many national and international political figures hailed him calling him a liberator and a statesman. Chinese government too called him an ‘outstanding national liberation movement leader and politician of Zimbabwe’.
US embassy in Harare cautiously gave the tribute:
‘ We join the world in reflecting on his legacy in securing Zimbabwe’s independence.’
But British politician Peter Hain was more honest:
‘Mugabe was a tragic case study of a liberation hero who then betrayed every one of the values of the freedom struggle’.
