Dr. Theresa Tam and her advice on sex during the coronavirus pandemic
Canada’s chief medical adviser, Dr. Theresa Tam recently talked about sex and coronavirus. She recommended solo sex to avoid coronavirus spread.
The doctor advised couples to use face masks during sex. She asked them to refrain from kissing during these crucial and difficult days. In her statement, she said:
“Sexual health is an important part of our overall health,”
She continued:
“However, sex can be complicated in the time of COVID-19, especially for those without an intimate partner in their household or whose sexual partner is at higher risk for COVID-19.
“Like other activities during COVID-19 that involve physical closeness, there are some things you can do to minimize the risk of getting infected and spreading the virus.”
“The lowest-risk sexual activity during COVID-19 involves yourself alone.”

The doctor added that semen and vaginal fluid are unlikely to spread the deadly virus. She elaborated that the closeness to the sexual partners is responsible for the spread. This could be worse with new partners. Dr. Theresa added:
“Even if the people involved do not have symptoms, sexual activity with new partners does increase your risk of getting or passing COVID-19 through close contact, like kissing,”
She also explained further what other precautions the couples should take to remain safe and prevent coronavirus infection.
Theresa said that before any sexual relations, check for symptoms in the partner. Avoid consuming alcohol as it impacts thinking and immunity. She advised couples to take safe decisions to stay alive. She said:
“The most important step is to establish a trusting relationship with your sexual partner,”
What do studies say?
Harvard University conducted a study recently and revealed that face masks during sex can prevent coronavirus transmission. In July 2020, British Columbia Centre for Disease Control also issued guidelines on safe sex.
It advised glory holes that are small barriers to oral or penetrative sex. They wrote:
“Use barriers, like walls (e.g., glory holes), that allow for sexual contact but prevent close face-to-face contact,”
