Who is Alexander McQueen?

Alexander McQueenwas a late British Fashion Designer and Couturier. Alexander was one of his period’s most renowned fashion designers, famous for his incredibly inventive designs that combined extraordinary technical skill with artistic creativity.

Moreover, McQueen established his brand, Alexander McQueen, in 1992. From 1996 to 2001, he served as Givenchy’s chief designer.

Alexander McQueen was born on 17th March 1969 in Lewisham, London, England. His born name is Lee Alexander McQueen. He was the youngest of six children born to Ronald and Joyce McQueen.

His father was a cab driver, and his mother was a social science teacher. Aside from that, Le was raised with five siblings.

McQueen is of British nationality and Caucasian ethnicity. In terms of his educational history, he attended Carpenters Road Primary School.

Alexander McQueen earned an MA in Fashion Degree from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. His graduation collection received widespread media attention and was purchased in its entirety by prominent fashion editor Isabella Blow.

Alexander McQueen began her career as a pattern cutter for avant-garde London-based Japanese designer Koji Tatsuno at the age of 20, before traveling to Milan to work for Romeo Gigli, an Italian designer known for his modest, romantic creations.

Already a skilled tailor, he learned how to be a fashion designer in London, drawing inspiration from the city’s history, world-class museums, and the growing BritArt movement.

In 1992, Lee established his label. He took over as Givenchy’s head designer in 1996, succeeding John Galliano. McQueen’s company was acquired by the Gucci Group (now Kering) in December 2000, and he continued to serve as creative director.

Furthermore, Alexander designed 36 collections for his business during his career, including his graduation collection and an incomplete final collection. Sarah Burton, a longstanding collaborator, took over as creative director of his label after his death.

Alexander McQueen’s achievements include being named British Designer of the Year four times between 1996 and 2001 by the British Fashion Council.

In 2003, he was awarded a CBE for his contributions to the fashion business, and the Council of Fashion Designers of America honored him as International Designer of the Year.

His Death Cause

On the morning of February 11, 2010, his housekeeper discovered McQueen had hanged himself at his Green Street, London W1 residence.

He was pronounced dead at the spot after paramedics arrived. McQueen’s note said, “Look after my dogs, sorry, I love you, Lee.” The note was not suspicious, according to the Metropolitan Police, but the death was not confirmed as a suicide.

A post-mortem examination revealed at Westminster Coroner’s Court on February 17, 2010, that McQueen died as a result of asphyxiation and hanging.

The autopsy was postponed until April 28, 2010, when his death proved to be a suicide. McQueen’s funeral was held on February 25, 2010, at St. Paul’s Church in Knightsbridge, West London.

His ashes were later dispersed in Skye at Kilmuir. On September 20, 2010, a memorial service was conducted for McQueen at St. Paul’s Cathedral. There were 2,500 people in attendance.
