In 1992, Lee established his label. He took over as Givenchy’s head designer in 1996, succeeding John Galliano. McQueen’s company was acquired by the Gucci Group (now Kering) in December 2000, and he continued to serve as creative director.

Furthermore, Alexander designed 36 collections for his business during his career, including his graduation collection and an incomplete final collection. Sarah Burton, a longstanding collaborator, took over as creative director of his label after his death.

On the morning of February 11, 2010, his housekeeper discovered McQueen had hanged himself at his Green Street, London W1 residence.

He was pronounced dead at the spot after paramedics arrived. McQueen’s note said, “Look after my dogs, sorry, I love you, Lee.” The note was not suspicious, according to the Metropolitan Police, but the death was not confirmed as a suicide.

A post-mortem examination revealed at Westminster Coroner’s Court on February 17, 2010, that McQueen died as a result of asphyxiation and hanging.

The autopsy was postponed until April 28, 2010, when his death proved to be a suicide. McQueen’s funeral was held on February 25, 2010, at St. Paul’s Church in Knightsbridge, West London.

His ashes were later dispersed in Skye at Kilmuir. On September 20, 2010, a memorial service was conducted for McQueen at St. Paul’s Cathedral. There were 2,500 people in attendance.
