He also created NCAA history by being the first-year wrestler to be chosen as the national tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler. Over the next three seasons, he won 40 games and lost none, finishing with the only perfect record in NCAA Division I history—159-0. By winning every match, he made history as the second wrestler ever to win four NCAA Division I titles.

Sanderson is the first individual to have won the Dan Hodge Trophy three times and the first to win it several times. For his achievements as a senior, he was named the 2002 Wade Schalles Award winner for outstanding collegiate pinner. He is the one with the longest victory streak across all NCAA levels. As a result, he is currently the most successful collegiate wrestler in history.
