Court grants Jay Leno conservatorship of his wife, Mavis!

The wife of American TV host on NBC, Jay Leno is suffering from severe dementia. Around three months back, Jay had applied for conservatorship for his wife. The Judge granted him the same and further praised Jay for the good care of his wife.

Jay Leno gets legal conservatorship of his wife

The current wife of American TV host, Jay Leno, 73 is Mavis, 77. Sadly, she has severe dementia. Hence, around three months back, Jay had filed an application in a Los Angeles court for grant of conservatorship of his wife. It is learned now that the court has granted him this conservatorship.

The judge dealing with the case in Los Angeles County Superior Court made this official on 9 April 2024. Jay’s legal team praised Jay for having taken such good care of his wife of 40 years. The judge agreed. People reports that the judge said:

“I think she’s in the least restrictive environment. I think she’s in very good care with Mr. Leno,”

She added:

“Everything you’re doing is right,”
“I totally understand this is a difficult period.”

Mavis and her mental condition

Mavis has severe dementia. She forgets things and it was difficult for her to manage things alone. Hence, in January 2024, Jay had filed for her conservatorship. The judge noted that Mavis can still consent for her conservatorship and is ready to come under the care of her husband fully and legally. Also, Jay is suitable for this responsibility.

Jay was in the court during the court grant for conservatorship to him. He added that he is currently in the process of planning her estate and preparing her will in accordance with her wishes.

Moreover, Jay had asked to be her conservator since that would make it certain that he would set up a living trust for her. This trust would take care of her in case he passes away before her.

Mavis’ mental condition is in an advanced stage. She sometimes does not recognize her husband and also does not remember her own date of birth. Mavis is disoriented and often recalls old memories of her parents and her mother who passed away nearly twenty years back.

The relationship timeline of the couple

Jay and Mavis wed in 1980. They have no children of their own. Jay suffered severe burn injuries of second and third degree type in a gasoline fire in the year 2022. The fire occurred when he was working on one of his steam cars. At that time, Mavis was by his side constantly until his recovery. Initially, Jay was shifted to the local Burbank emergency room and later transported to the tertiary care center of Grossman Burn Center for further specialized management.

Mavis’ court-appointed counsel, Ronald Ostrin stated that Jay and Mavis have a loving, supportive and long term relationship of more than 40 years. He also added that she looks up to Jay as her protector and completely trusts him.

Mavis’ neurologist, Dr. Hart Cohen also had good opinion about Jay stating that he treats Mavis like gold.
