Dick Van Dyke is just days away from celebrating his 99th birthday on December 13, 2024.
On December 5, the legendary actor appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and discussed his upcoming birthday, sharing insights about aging and his extensive career in entertainment.
Coldplay musician Chris Martin also joined the show to discuss Van Dyke’s appearance in the music video for his song “All My Love,” and his son Barry, who is 73 years old.
Martin fondly recalled witnessing the warm interaction between Van Dyke and his son Barry during a recent interview. He recounted,
“I saw Barry approach Dick and ask, ‘Dad, can I turn the pool slide on?”
The audience enjoyed the conversation, during which Martin humorously noted,
“It was so sweet because it was like a son and his dad, “But they’re collectively 176 [years old],”
Aside from Barry, Van Dyke has a son named Christian who is 74, and daughters Stacy, 68, and Carrie, 63.
He also jokingly remarked about President Joe Biden, saying,
“I’m old enough to be Joe Biden’s father,”
Throughout the episode, Van Dyke appeared cheerful and engaged with fans through humor. He acknowledged moments of forgetfulness by joking,
“I experience dementia every once in a while… like right now.”
Kimmel responded by assuring him that he experiences similar moments. Kimmel also shared a story about seeing Van Dyke earlier that day and asking how he was doing.
The esteemed actor replied,
“‘Very old.'”
Last year, when Van Dyke turned 98, he shared with PEOPLE that he intended to celebrate his birthday simply, surrounded by several of his grandchildren. He mentioned,
“I’m not much on traditions, I don’t think,”
He expressed that he finds joy and gratitude “every day” of his life. He also noted that his wife brings him coffee in bed each morning, saying,
“I get treated like a king around here.”

He is particularly famous for his roles in “Mary Poppins” and “The Dick Van Dyke Show.”
In June 2024, he made history by becoming the oldest winner of a Daytime Emmy Award. He received this prestigious honor for his guest role as Timothy Robicheaux on the soap opera “Days of Our Lives.”
During his acceptance speech, he humorously remarked,
“If I’d known I was going to live this long, I’d have taken better care of myself”
Similarly, he won “Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic,” at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmy Awards for his birthday special in September 2024. During his acceptance speech, he humorously mentioned he was “looking for work.”
Reflecting on his long career, he expressed amazement at still being active in the industry after 75 years, jokingly stating,
“I’m looking for work if anybody has.”
Dick enjoys a vibrant life but faces the challenge of having outlived many close friends, including Norman Lear, who passed away at 101 in December 2023.
Reflecting on this loss, Van Dyke noted,
“I had a bunch of friends there to say nice things, but Mary Tyler Moore, Morey Amsterdam, Rosie Rose Marie, Carl Reiner, Norman Lear—all the people that I always loved and associated with are gone, so I’m having to make new friends.”
Despite this, he expressed optimism about his social life, stating,
“I’m happy to say people come to me; I don’t have to go out looking.”
