Dick Van Dyke is just days away from celebrating his 99th birthday on December 13, 2024.

On December 5, the legendary actor appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and discussed his upcoming birthday, sharing insights about aging and his extensive career in entertainment.

Coldplay musician Chris Martin also joined the show to discuss Van Dyke’s appearance in the music video for his song “All My Love,” and his son Barry, who is 73 years old.

Martin fondly recalled witnessing the warm interaction between Van Dyke and his son Barry during a recent interview. He recounted,

“I saw Barry approach Dick and ask, ‘Dad, can I turn the pool slide on?”

The audience enjoyed the conversation, during which Martin humorously noted,

“It was so sweet because it was like a son and his dad, “But they’re collectively 176 [years old],”

Aside from Barry, Van Dyke has a son named Christian who is 74, and daughters Stacy, 68, and Carrie, 63.

He also jokingly remarked about President Joe Biden, saying,

“I’m old enough to be Joe Biden’s father,”

Throughout the episode, Van Dyke appeared cheerful and engaged with fans through humor. He acknowledged moments of forgetfulness by joking,

“I experience dementia every once in a while… like right now.”

“I had a bunch of friends there to say nice things, but Mary Tyler Moore, Morey Amsterdam, Rosie Rose Marie, Carl Reiner, Norman Lear—all the people that I always loved and associated with are gone, so I’m having to make new friends.”

Despite this, he expressed optimism about his social life, stating,

“I’m happy to say people come to me; I don’t have to go out looking.”
