Felipe Esparza is a Mexican-born American stand-up comedian and actor who is popularly known for playing the role of Cabbie Steve in the 2020 American comedy film The Opening Act.

Felipe Esparza was born on June 11, 1976 in Sinaloa, Mexico. As of 2024, he is 47 years old.

Moreover, he and his family had to face several challenges to migrate to America. He resided on his mother’s family’s ranch in Sinaloa before relocating with his family to live with his aunt in Tijuana, where they stayed for approximately two years.

Esparza’s father had abandoned the family and migrated to the United States alone. Later on, even before the enactment of President Reagan’s amnesty law, Esparza, along with his mother and two brothers, entered the United States illegally, with the help of a smuggler known as a “coyote”.

During their trip, they were stopped at a checkpoint in San Clemente, California. He and his brothers were held in a separate holding cell from their mother for a brief period before the family was deported.

They made three attempts at the trip but were deported each time. On their third try, they used their cousins’ California passports.

They were driven to Carson, California, where they changed cars twice before moving to the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles where his father lived.

Speaking about his educational background, he joined Theodore Roosevelt High School.

Felipe made his acting debut in 2003 playing the role of Pablo in El Matador. Later, he made his appearance in The Deported as Fernando and in I’m Not Like That No More.

His other film credits include The Fix, She’s Allergic to Cats, The Opening Act, and Taco Shop.

In 2015, he played the role of Felipe in the television series The Shop. In the following year, he landed the role of Alan in Campus Law.

In 2020, he had a recurring role of Crazy Dave in an American comedy-drama streaming television series Gentefied. Recently, he gave his voice to the character Mexican Officer in the 2023  American adult animated sitcom Royal Crackers.
