Gillian began her career as a theater actress and performed at the Pittsburgh Public Theater. She made her movie acting debut playing Katie in the film Building Girl in 2005.  The following year, she made her television acting debut playing Adele Congreve in The Book of Daniel (2006).

Her first big break came up in the television series Community (2009-2015) in which she played Britta Perry. Since then, she has appeared in several movies and television films. Currently, she is filming for Magic Camp (2017).

Gillian Jacobs won the Method Fest Award-Best Actress award for her performance in Noname’s. That same year, she won Phoenix Film Festival Award for the same film. She was nominated for the Best Comedy Supporting Actress Awards and won the TV Guide Award for her role in Community in 2012.
