Journalist Grant Wahl’s wife reveals his cause of death

American soccer journalist Grant Wahl died in Qatar while covering the 2022 World Cup. He had been covering the 2022 World Cup matches. This is the eighth World Cup that Grant Wahl has been reporting.

An American soccer journalist took his last breath in Qatar on Friday’s match between Argentina and the Netherlands. He was just 48. Wahl reportedly fell over backward in his seat in the press box at Lusail Iconic Stadium during extra time.

He was then quickly transferred to Hamad General Hospital, unfortunately, the medical team later declared Wahl lifeless.

Grant Wahl’s wife Dr. Celine Gounder, who is also a contributor for CBS News, has revealed the cause of the journalist’s death after an autopsy report has been released.

According to Celine, Wahl suffered a ruptured aortic aneurysm which led to his death while he was covering the 2022 World Cup last week. In her recent interview with CBS News, she disclosed,

“He had an autopsy done here in New York by the New York City medical examiner’s office,” Celine, an infectious disease specialist, and it showed that he had an aortic aneurysm that ruptured.”

Celine paid a heartfelt tribute to her beloved husband

Gounder offered more details about the death of the journalist in a lengthy post on her husband’s popular blog in Substack. She began the blog with a heartfelt tribute to her beloved husband, that reads,

“First and foremost, on behalf of myself and our family, I want to express our deepest gratitude for the outpouring of support, love, and sympathy from around the world. This continues to be a very difficult and painful time as we grieve a beloved husband, brother, and friend,”

She then went on to clarify,

“An autopsy was performed by the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office. Grant died from the rupture of a slowly growing, undetected ascending aortic aneurysm with hemopericardium,”
“The chest pressure he experienced shortly before his death may have represented the initial symptoms. No amount of CPR or shocks would have saved him,”
“His death was unrelated to COVID. His death was unrelated to vaccination status. There was nothing nefarious about his death,”
