Ziya Paval and Zahhad, a trans couple, are now proud parents
Ziya Paval and Zahhad, a transgender couple from Kerala, India made history by welcoming a biological baby together. This is the first time such an event has happened in India.
The couple who announced their pregnancy some time ago welcomed the baby at a state-run hospital on Wednesday.
Ziya, one of the trans partners told a news outlet,
“The baby was born by around 9.30 am through a Caesarean Section at the Government Medical College Hospital,“
Paval, 21, also noted that both the baby and her partner, Zahhad, 23, who delivered the baby are doing well.
However, the couple did not reveal the sex of their baby.
Many people on social media including Kerala Health Minister Veena George congratulated the couple on their little one’s arrival. She wished the couple the very best over a phone call and said she would meet them the next time she was in Kozhikode.
Ms. Paval and her partner Mr. Zahad, who only prefers using one name, always wanted to be parents. During their pregnancy, the duo chose to pause their hormone therapy so that no difficulty would be there.
The couple was both estranged from their families when they met nearly three years ago.
Paval belongs to a conservative Muslim family while Zahhad is from a Christian family.

Ziya and Zahhad’s story is an inspiration to trans people
Earlier this week, the couple told BBC that their pregnancy case is the rarest in India because “no one else has called themselves a biological parent in the transgender community as far as we know”
It was a difficult road for the two who were at different stages of their respective gender transition processes of their own when they made up their mind to have a baby of their own. They decided to have their child a year and a half ago.
The grateful couple did not forget to thank their well-wishers as they shared a glimpse of their baby with them.
Since then, congratulatory messages have been pouring in on their social media pages.
Transgender actress Neha S commented on Pavel’s Instagram post,
“Trans people deserve family,”
Zahad, who is an accountant by profession, said that he will go back to work after two months as his partner will take care of their newborn.
India, one of the most populated countries in the world, has around two million transgender people. But activists say that the number is higher than that.
In 2014, the Supreme Court of India stated that they have the same rights as any other individual and deserve a normal life.
However trans people still find it very hard to get access to healthcare and education and often have to face prejudice and stigma.
