RIP! John Refoua passed away at the age of 58
John Refoua is no longer alive among us. Film and Television editor took his last breath on May 14 following a battle with bile cancer. He was just 58.
His death was confirmed by his wife Serena Bell Refousa with a heartbreaking statement on Facebook that reads,
“Dear friends, my brilliant, sweet, creative husband John Djahanshah Refoua passed away last night May 14 surrounded by family and friends who loved him,”
John is survived by his wife Serena Bell Refousa and his 4-year-old granddaughter Avery Sophia.

Serena revealed her beloved husband died of cholangiocarcinoma, rare cancer that forms in the bile ducts. Refoua had been battling the disease since he was diagnosed in February 2022.
His wife continued,
“Despite the pain and complexities of this aggressive disease, he faced it with courage and grit. He continued to work and edit on James Cameron’s Avatar 3 right up to his final weeks. His life’s trajectory was quite unique and anything he touched, he made better.”
“He loved music, movies, politics, traveling, vintage cars, science fiction, and his 4 year old granddaughter Avery Sophia. We will miss his generosity and wisdom.”
What was John Refoua best known for?
John Refoua was an American film and television editor. He rose to prominence as an editor of the 2009 epic science fiction film, Avatar. Similarly, he was nominated for Best Film Editing at the 2009 Academy Awards alongside with James Cameron and Stephen E. Rivkin.
John debuted as an editor in a 1999 comedy film Soft Toilet Seats. He then worked in several films including Ghosts of the Abyss (2003), Reno 911!: Miami (2007), Balls of Fury (2007), 21 & Over (2013), Olympus Has Fallen (2013), Transformers: The Last Knight (2017), and more…
