Katie Couric: Know about her two marriages and cancer awareness programs!
Katie Couric is an American journalist and a breast cancer survivor. She is doing a lot of good work in the field of cancer awareness and screening.
Katie Couric and her first marriage
American journalist, Katie Couric is 66 years old now. Her full name is Katherine Anne Couric and she hails from Arlington, Virginia.
Katie’s father, John Martin Couric, Jr. was a public relations executive and news editor. Her mother, Elinor Tullie was a homemaker and a part-time writer. During her high school days, she interned at the WAVA, the all-news radio in Washington DC. In 1979, she did her graduation in American Studies from the University of Virginia.
Katie was dating John Paul “Jay” Monahan III who was an attorney. And in 1989, the two decided to walk down the aisle together. Their first child, daughter, Elinor Tully “Ellie” Monahan arrived on 23 July 1991 in Washington DC. On 5 January 1996, Katie gave birth to their second child, daughter Caroline “Carrie” in New York City.
However, Jay was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in the mid-1990s and he died in 1998 due to it. He was just 42 years of age at that time. Katie took to single-parent her two children.
And Katie remarries
Katie began dating financier John Molner in 2011. After two years in September 2013, John proposed to her and she said yes. The couple exchanged wedding vows on 21 June 2014. It was an intimate and private affair with hand-picked family members and close friends. The wedding ceremony was at her home in The Hamptons. The couple now features on the Sur La Table in an online cooking show Full Plate with Katie and John. The two have no kids together.
Katie’s advocacy on cancer
Katie has lost her close ones due to cancer. Her first husband, Jay died due to colorectal cancer at the age of 42. Her sister, Emily Couric, who was a Virginia Democratic state senator died on 18 October 2001. She was just 54 years of age at that time and had pancreatic cancer.
And on 21 June 2022, Katie was diagnosed with breast cancer in a routine screening. She had surgery for it in July 2022 and began radiation therapy in September 2022.
Since 1998, after the death of her first husband, Katie has been a spokeswoman for colorectal cancer awareness programs. In 2000, she underwent a preventive colonoscopy on air. And this inspired more people to do so. In 2003, an article that was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine stated:
“Katie Couric’s televised colon cancer awareness campaign was temporarily associated with an increase in colonoscopy use in two different data sets. This illustrates the possibility that a well-known individual can draw attention and support to worthwhile causes.”
Katie has been active in the National Hockey League’s program of Hockey Fights Cancer campaign. In 2005 she had broadcast her mammogram on the Today show. Moreover, she has been the guest of honor of several cancer awareness programs. Katie also champions the cause of Parkinson’s disease awareness since her dad expired due to Parkinson’s disease complications at the age of 90 in 2011.
