Since 1998, after the death of her first husband, Katie has been a spokeswoman for colorectal cancer awareness programs. In 2000, she underwent a preventive colonoscopy on air. And this inspired more people to do so. In 2003, an article that was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine stated:

Katie Couric’s televised colon cancer awareness campaign was temporarily associated with an increase in colonoscopy use in two different data sets. This illustrates the possibility that a well-known individual can draw attention and support to worthwhile causes.”

Katie has been active in the National Hockey League’s program of Hockey Fights Cancer campaign. In 2005 she had broadcast her mammogram on the Today show. Moreover, she has been the guest of honor of several cancer awareness programs. Katie also champions the cause of Parkinson’s disease awareness since her dad expired due to Parkinson’s disease complications at the age of 90 in 2011.
