Kodo Nishimura is a make-up artist who is renowned in Japanese and American society. He rose to fame for his reality of being gay and his journey of keeping his sexuality a closely guarded secret while growing up in a Buddhist temple in Tokyo.
While being openly gay in Japan and pursuing a same-sex marriage is considered illegal in Japan, Kodo Nishimura living his true identity is an inspiration to others. He is also an author who wrote the Japanese memoir This Monk Wears Heels: Be Who You Are, was a monk from Pure Land School.

How did Nishimura come out? His journey struggling as a closeted gay monk
Kodo Nishimura is a Buddhist monk who grew up in a Buddhist temple as a child of priest Jodo shu. He has learned designing of flowers, ikebana for years to heal himself while he hides his dark past saying,
“As I was growing up, I increasingly felt like I wasn’t “supposed” to do these things anymore because I’m biologically male. Kids around me asked, “Do you have any male friends?” and told me, “You run like a girl.”
The gay boy lost himself early in life but as a believer in Buddhism, he praises his journey of self-discovery while playing with makeup brushes. As a homosexual advocate, he is now a missionary to free people from taboos and encourage them to live life in their style.
The real inspiration for Kodo Nishimura came from the Princess Diaries movies as he felt like Princess Mia. He then wanna pursue makeup with full dedication as he said about the character,
“I saw how Mia grew with the power of hair, makeup, and a Coach backpack — but in the end, even though she doesn’t have her makeup or hair done, she was able to deliver her message.”
Kodo Nishimura is an American university graduate whose sexuality as a Japanese monk had given him a bitter childhood experience growing up. Though an Asian makeup artist who overcome the social stigmas of conservative Japanese society, he appeared in Queer Eye: We’re in Japan! season.
