Madonna paid tribute to Seymour Stein for launching her career following his death

In a lengthy and emotional tribute on Instagram, Madonna reflected on how Seymour Stein changed her life direction.

She wrote:

“Seymour Stein has left us! I need to catch my breath. He was one of the most influential men in my life. He changed and shaped my world.”

Madonna recounted how she was discovered by the executive of Sire Records, Seymour Stein. She explained that during a packed club night, an A&R man from Sire named Michael Rosenblatt heard her music and offered to introduce her to Seymour. Despite Seymour being in the hospital for a heart ailment at the time, the meeting took place.

She explained the meeting:

“When I met him he was laying in a hospital bed wearing his boxer shorts and a wife beater! He had a cannula up his nose and a saline drip in his arm.”

She played him her song on a cassette and he signed her to his record label that very day. The singer ended her recollection with heartfelt thanks and the sentiment that Seymour would never be forgotten.

Stein died at the age of 80

Stein died on Sunday morning in Los Angeles at his own home after a long battle with cancer. He died on April 2, 2023, at age 80.

In an official statement by his daughter Mandy, she said:

“The music he brought to the world impacted so many people’s lives in a positive way.”

Seymour Stein was a legendary American music executive and entrepreneur, born on March 18, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York. He was famous as the co-founder of Sire Records, one of the most influential independent record labels of the 1970s and 1980s.

His early career in the music industry started in the 1960s when he worked for several record labels, including King Records, Billboard Records, and Red Bird Records.

In 1966, he co-founded Sire Records with producer Richard Gottehrer. The label quickly gained a reputation for signing groundbreaking artists, such as the Ramones, Talking Heads, The Pretenders, Madonna, Depeche Mode, and more.

His success with Sire Records earned him a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. He has also received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the music industry, including the prestigious Ahmet Ertegun Award from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.
