Maya was born on August 15, 1970, in Jakarta, Indonesia. She is the daughter of Indonesian businessman Lolo Soetoro and American cultural anthropologist Ann Dunham.

When she was 10 years old, her parents got divorced and her father remarried. Furthermore, she has a half-brother, Yusuf Aji Soetoro, and a half-sister, Rahayu Nurmaida Soetoro.

Talking about his nationality, Maya is Indonesian-American and her ethnicity is mixed. Concerning in her education, she joined Jakarta International School from 1981 to 1984. Later in 1988, she completed her graduation from Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Additionally, Maya earned her B.A. degree from Barnard College of Columbia University. Moreover, she received an M.A. in second language studies and an M.A. in Secondary Education from New York University.

Back in 2006, Maya Soetoro-Ng gained her Ph.D. in international comparative education from the University of Hawaii.
