Then, the write-in candidate Evin Mathews withdrew from the candidacy, on August 27, 2014, after which Andrew Gillum became the mayor.

Being a mayor he went on to contribute to different projects including the Ban the Box campaign, the DOT Fastlane Blog, the Conference on Early Childhood Education (ECE), youth mentoring opportunities, the implementation of Safe Neighborhoods in 2015, and others.

In March 2017, he announced his race for governorship and ran as a Democrat.

With a surprising and upset victory, he became the winner of the Democratic nomination for governor, against the former congresswoman, Gwen Graham.

Creating the new record, he became the first black candidate for governor in Florida’s history.

During his long political career, Andrew Gillum has been awarded several honors and accolades. In 2001, he came the country’s top student leader, and was named to Essence Magazine’s ‘2010 Emerging Leader.’
