Shona McGarty quits EastEnders show

It was with a heavy heart that actress, Shona McGarty announced about her decision to leave the EastEnders show that she was a part of for the past 16 years.

Shona, 32 joined the show in 2008 when she was 16. The actress portrays the character of Whitney Dean in the drama series. Shona revealed that in July, she will stop acting in the show.

It was a tough decision for her to take. But she wants to explore other avenues and opportunities before she is too old for it.

Shona’s statement to The Sun

The English actress told The Sun UK:

“It was a really difficult decision, because it’s all I’ve ever known. I pretty much grew up on the Square, so I feel like I’m leaving home. But I had to put on my big girl pants and be quite brave, because life is so short, and you feel that more and more as you get older.”
“There are other opportunities and areas of the industry I want to explore before I get too old! All things come to an end and this is the new chapter of my life.”

She continued:

“So although it was a big decision, once I’d made it, I was quite resolute that this was something I had to do. I mean, 16 years is amazing. I’ve had a really good run and Whitney needs a break.”

Shona greeted at the studio gate by fans

Earlier in the month of April 2024, Shona finished her schedules for the show. As she headed home, her fans gathered at the gate to wish and greet her. She expressed:

“I’m not gonna lie, I feel like it’s a kind of grief and I didn’t think I’d be so emotional. But seeing all the fans who had these messages and cards was just beautiful and, although I tried to keep it together, I actually fell to pieces.”

She had a smile on her face as she posed for selfies with her fans. Shona signed autographs and also chatted with her fans.

Shona’s co-stars presented her with cards, flowers and presents on the last day of the shoot. Her car was full of these gifts from them.

Shona’s character Whitney was the adopted daughter of Bianca Jackson that Patsy Palmer portrayed in the show. She was part of some great storylines in the show that included sexual abuse, grooming, loss of a baby, kidnapping, stalking and also illicit affairs.

Shona will start a new project after a week but she refused to talk more on it. She loves singing and probably her next project might have some music in it. Often, she posts her singing videos on her social media. Moreover, in 2018, she also had created a song in charity for Great Ormond Street Hospital. Additionally, in 2021, she has made a cover video of The Beatles’ Let It Be for the charity Mind.
