The relationship timeline of the couple
Richard met Amanda when both were working at a PR company in London, England, the UK. They started dating and after eight years of wonderful courtship, the two exchanged wedding vows in May 2002. Later, Amanda or Mindy was a columnist for Daily Express.
Their first child, a daughter arrived in 2001. They named her Izzy. And their second child, daughter Willow was born in 2004.
Richard had a severe car crash accident in 2006. He suffered brain and several other injuries when he crashed his jet powered car at the car racing track of Elvington airfield while filming in York. The car with a speed of 288 mph had veered towards the right side and its parachutes had opened.
The car body had to be cut in order to free Richard who was trapped inside. The TV presenter was critical and in intensive care unit for a few days. Later, his condition was stable and he was shifted to the general ward.
Amanda’s support for Richard after the crash
Richard was in coma for some time after the accident. Wife Amanda was Richard’s pillar of support post-crash. In 2022, Richard narrated the time when he said that it was Amanda’s screaming that brought him back from his coma. Richard said:
“In hospital, in intensive care, things were apparently not looking very good, but I didn’t know, there was a lot of morphine floating around my system,”
“I finally woke and I shared with my wife Mindy a dream I’d been having. A really, really, really vivid one, probably, partly, on account of the morphine.”
“And in my mind I’d been walking these hills here in the Lake District, overlooking Buttermere. I was having a lovely time strolling along and gradually I got a growing sense of you know when you know you’re in trouble.”
“(It) grew and grew until eventually in my dream I turned back, I didn’t walk back around this tree and carry on and then I woke.”
When he regained consciousness, he told his wife about his dream. And Amanda revealed to him that she had been screaming at him at the top of her voice and telling him:
“Don’t you dare die!”
He continued:
”That’s when I turned back from this tree in my dream and that’s when I woke,”
“My last thought took me somewhere I love and somewhere I’m happy. So I’m not scared of this old tree. I pass it regularly, most months I come up here and walk, and every time I pass it, I do feel comforted.”
