Rufus Wainwright was born in New York, USA, to musicians Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle. However, his parents divorced when he was just a child.

Following in his family’s footsteps, he started playing piano at age six and by thirteen he was already touring with his sister Martha Wainwright, mother, and aunt as the McGarrigle Sisters and Family.

He lived in Montreal with his mother for a long time and even attended McGill University to study both classical and rock piano. He released his debut album named Rufus Wainwright in May 1998.

Wainwright then went on to release many hit albums like Poses, Want One, Folkocracy, Out of the Game, Release the Stars, and so on.

The child rarely makes a public appearance. In February 2022, Rufus celebrated his daughter’s birthday by sharing a photo of her cuddling with their pet dog.
