Simon Cowell Postpones Auditions of Britain’s Got Talent Following Liam Payne’s Death
Simon Cowell is heartbroken over Liam Payne’s death. The former American Idol judge postponed Thursday’s Britain’s Got Talent audition after finding out that his student was no more.
“Due to the tragic passing of Liam Payne, BGT has decided to postpone today’s auditions in Blackpool. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause,” ApplauseStore, which manages tickets for the show, announced via X on Thursday.
In a separate post, they also mourned the loss of the former 1D member, writing, “We are devastated about the very sad news about @LiamPayne. We send our love, strength, and condolences to all his loved ones, family, and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”
Cowell reportedly called off the audition last minute which was set to be held in Blackpool, England. He is yet to speak personally on the tragic death of Payne.
Cowell, 65, along with singer Nicole Scherzinger formed the boy band One Direction on the 7th season of X Factor in 2010. He was also the first manager of the boy band which included Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan.
Payne originally appeared on Cowell’s radar when he auditioned for the X Factor as a solo act. He then made it to the judges’ house stage. Just two years later, he returned to the British reality television music competition when he joined One Direction with the other then-teens.
One Direction didn’t win the competition but scored a third place. After that, they signed with Cowell’s Syco Entertainment record label.
In the five years that they were together from 2010 to 2015, the band made music history and sold millions of records. They became the only group in the history of the Billboard 200 albums chart to have their first four albums debut at No. 1.

Payne’s fans are lashing out at Cowell
Following Payne’s death, fans took to social media to talk about his good and bad relationship with Simon.
One angry fan wrote, “Waiting for Simon Cowell to share his pain for Liam when he is the only one responsible for him ending up like that, come on Simon talk, that’s what you love to do most,’
X Factor alum Katie Waissel wrote, “My heart is completely torn to shreds right now, I am at an absolute loss for words. If Simon Cowell dare put a statement out on the heart-wrenching, tragic loss of my dear and darling friend Liam, he would be a fool. We all know the truth… and I’ll be sure it all comes out. #justiceforliam.’’
In June, the record executive said that he regrets not owning the band’s name.
“I should have owned the name. That’s the problem. When you give an artist the name, it’s not yours. And that’s my only regret. So if you’re listening, I’ll buy it back from you,” he said on The Diary of a CEO at the time.
He added, “If one of the band members, for whatever reason, say they don’t want to tour, it can stop the others [from] touring. So, if it was me who owned the name, it wouldn’t be a problem.”
Liam Payne and his mental health struggles
On Wednesday, the Night Changes singer lost his life after falling from the third floor of his balcony in a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was 31.

During his appearance on a 2021 episode of the Diary of a CEO podcast, the pop star revealed that he had suicidal thoughts when he was a member of One Direction. He said at the time, ‘’There is some stuff that I have definitely never, never spoken about. It was really, really, really severe. And it was a problem.”
