Siddiq started selling drugs at the age of 14. Four days after turning nineteen, he was given a prison sentence for cocaine trafficking.

He was housed in the Ruben M. Torres Unit in Hondo, Texas, for 15 years of his sentence. On October 21, 1997, he was freed from prison. Following his release, he held positions at a department store and a store selling sunglasses.

During his imprisonment, he found his talent to make others laugh by cracking jokes with his fellow prisoners to lighten the situation. His captive audience was his coworkers, with whom he shared a prison laundry.

He says that one of the first people who inspired him to perform stand-up was Rodney Dangerfield, who “made me see that the comedy game doesn’t have to be a selfish thing.” Def Comedy Jam, he said, gave him “the drive to start” performing stand-up comedy.

In December 1997, Siddiq made his stand-up comedy debut at Houston’s Just Joking Comedy Club.

His debut performance took place on Apollo Night at the club, which drew a lot of college students. Siddiq remembers that because he was wearing a suit, people jeered at him when he initially went on stage.

He waited two weeks before doing it again, this time in jeans and a T-shirt. A month later, Siddiq was co-hosting the Apollo Night show.

After meeting Rickey Smiley at the Arena Theatre, who advised him to do so to wow audiences, he started wearing suits again.

From 2000 to 2003, Siddiq appeared on BET’s ComicView for four seasons in a row.  He made an appearance on the tenth episode of the eighth season of HBO’s Def Comedy Jam, which aired on March 8, 2008, at the show’s finale.

In the 2000s, Siddiq made seven or nine albums, the first of which was called Necessary Therapy, but he was not happy enough with any of them to put them out, according to interviews.

2010-2015

On May 22, 2010, Siddiq published his debut comedy special, Talking Loud Saying Something, initially as a digital album and then on CD in December of the same year.

His comedic storytelling technique had a sea change after the release of the album: “I changed on my first album, which I thought was a lot more in-depth than someone would have known if they had just listened to the album.” Siddiq said, “The way I sounded and the way I delivered, I was like ‘this is going to be the blueprint of my transition.'”

At “Preliminary” local showcases in September, more than 300 comedians from throughout the nation performed; forty of them advanced to the “Semi-finals,” which took place in October in four different cities: Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, and Fort Lauderdale.

Before being selected to play at Chicago Improv, Siddiq gave a performance at Houston Improv. He was one of nine comedians who advanced to the November 6 Comics to Watch showcase “Finals” at the New York Comedy Festival.

2016-2024
