Anne Hathaway is reflecting on her struggle with fertility before welcoming her two sons Jonathan, 8, and Jack, 4, with her husband Adam Shulman.

The Idea of You actress, 41, had a miscarriage in 2015 amid her Off-Broadway play “Grounded.” During an interview with Vanity Fair for the April cover story, she opened up about her loss.

She said to Vanity Fair,

“The first time it didn’t work out for me, I was doing a play and I had to give birth onstage every night.”

Anne didn’t go public about her miscarriage at the time. However, she was super open about what she was going through with some close friends, who visited her backstage after one of her shows.

She revealed,

“It was too much to keep it in when I was onstage pretending everything was fine, I had to keep it real otherwise….”

The Les Miserables star then went on to reflect on the journey to having her first son, where she became empathetic like the whole experience made her way more understanding and compassionate towards other people who were having a tough time trying to get pregnant.

“So when it did go well for me, having been on the other side of it—where you have to have the grace to be happy for someone—I wanted to let my sisters know, ‘You don’t have to always be graceful. I see you and I’ve been you.'”
“It’s really hard to want something so much and to wonder if you’re doing something worng,”

Following the miscarriage, Anne gave birth to her first child son Jonathan Rosebanks Shulman on March 24, 2016.

However, she and her husband Adam kept notoriously private about her pregnancy at the time.

Three years later, the couple revealed that they were expecting their second child together. Hathaway posted a mirror selfie of herself on Instagram showing off her baby bump and captioned it,

“It’s not for a movie … #2”

Besides, she mentioned she wanted to keep it real with people facing fertility challenges. She added,

“All kidding aside, for everyone going through infertility and conception hell, please know it was not a straight line to either of my pregnancies. Sending you extra love.”

However, the pair kept the birth of their second son private until Anne revealed during her appearance in “Live With Kelly and Ryan” in October 2020. She said at the time,

“I have a beautiful almost -11-month-old boy, I was pregnant when I made ‘The Witches,’ so technically he’s all over that performance.”
