RIP Ginnie Newhart! Bob Newhart‘s wife passed away this Sunday, April 23, after six decades of togetherness. The power couple marked their 60th wedding anniversary just three months ago.

Bob shared the heartbreaking news via Twitter on behalf of the family member, writing,

“We lost our beloved Ginnie Quinn Newhart – Wife, Mother and Grandmother on April 23rd, 2023 after a long battle with illness. She was our rock and we miss her terribly,”

Similarly, family publicist Jerry Digney confirmed the tragic news to PEOPLE issuing a statement that reads,

“Ginnie Newhart, 82, beloved wife of 60 years to comedy legend Bob Newhart, passed away Sunday April 23rd, after a long illness,”

The wife of a comedian had been battling with an unknown illness for a long time.

Ginnie is survived by her husband Bob Newhart, three children Robert Jr., Timothy, Courtney, and Jennifer, as well as 10 grandchildren.

As soon as her death was confirmed many expressed their grief via social media posts including Bob’s co-star Julia Duffy. Julia called Ginnie a “funny, candid” woman with a “huge heart.”

She wrote on Twitter,

“Gave me the best advice in everything from decorating to childbirth and children and yes, husbands. I loved her. RIP Ginnie Newhart heart.”

Bob and Ginnie met through a mutual friend, actor Buddy Hackett, who put them up on a blind date and the rest is history. In a 2013 interview with City & Shore magazine, Ginnie shared,

“Buddy came back one day and said in his own inimitable way, ‘I met this young guy and his name is Bobby Newhart, and he’s a comic and he’s Catholic and you’re Catholic and I think maybe you should marry each other,’”

Bob disclosed their decades-long marriage’s secret in 2019, stating,

“I think laughter is vital. It’s as vital as breathing. It gets you through difficult areas.Laughter is one of the most beautiful sounds in the world. It’s like music, of a kind”
