Cher announces retirement from music after a six-decade career
Cher, whose real name is Cherilyn Sarkisian, has announced her retirement from music after a successful career that lasted over six decades.
The 76-year-old singer revealed that her forthcoming album will be her final project, marking the end of an era in the music industry.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, November 26, during her promotional tour for her new memoir titled “Cher: The Memoir,” at the Lyceum Theatre in London.
While on stage, Cher expressed her excitement about the new album, which will be her first release since 2013, stating,
“This is probably my last album that I’m gonna do. I’m really excited. They are great songs and I’m just really excited that I’m doing it.”
She then humorously acknowledged her age by saying,
“‘I’m older than dirt now, OK? I’m the oldest person I meet in almost every room unless I’m in an old folks’ home.”
The Believe singer also shared insights into her perspective on aging, advising younger women to “get over” themselves and enjoy life. She noted,
“I would give anything to be 60 again,”
Additionally, the Goddess of Pop emphasized that age should not define beauty and playfully called herself a “hottie.”
The pop star admitted that accepting aging has been difficult for her, but she enjoys being around younger people because she is not ready to fully embrace her age.
She said,
“I like young people because a lot of my friends don’t want to have that much fun. They can just go off and be old fogies.”
Cher: A legendary career and upcoming projects
Cher released her most recent album, a holiday record titled “Christmas,” in 2023. However, her last album featuring original songs was “Closer to Truth,” which came out in 2013.
Meanwhile, her upcoming project will be her first album of original material in over ten years.
In May, it was reported by Retropop that Cher is collaborating with her boyfriend, Alexander “AE” Edwards, on this new album. During a red-carpet interview, she mentioned,
“[Alexander] and I are gonna start a new album, We haven’t started yet; he’s going to produce it.”
Throughout her extensive career, Cher has produced 27 studio albums, four soundtrack albums, and three live albums.
Additionally, she recorded five studio albums, a live album, and two soundtracks as part of the duo Sonny & Cher with her former husband Sonny Bono.
Cher is recognized as one of the best-selling recording artists in history with over 100 million records sold as a solo artist and another 40 million with Sonny & Cher.
Her iconic hit “Believe” has sold more than 11 million copies globally and topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart
It has been certified platinum by the RIAA and remains the best-selling single by a solo female artist in the U.K.
Furthermore, other notable hits include “If I Could Turn Back Time,” “Strong Enough,” and “After All.” Similarly, she has received numerous accolades including an Academy Award, an Emmy, a Grammy, and a Cannes Film Festival Award.
This year, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Notably, Cher is the only woman to have topped a Billboard chart across seven consecutive decades.
