He received his degree in mathematics and transdisciplinary science from Houston in 1994. In 16 games with Houston, Helton completed 47 of 87 throws for 420 yards, one touchdown, and four interceptions.
After leaving Houston, Helton joined Rip Scherer’s staff at Memphis, where he also served as running back coach. Tommy West succeeded Scherer in 2001. Helton remained on staff under Tommy West until moving on to teach the wide outs in 2003.
In 2007, Helton was elevated to quarterback coach and offensive coordinator. Furthermore, in 2005, Helton coached DeAngelo Williams, a first-round NFL draft pick, as well as Duke Calhoun, a 2006 Conference USA All-Freshman pick.
