Even with his excellent athletic record and four-star ranking, he received few offers after high school. He eventually gave up playing quarterback at South Dakota State to play defense at Iowa.

As a true freshman in 2021, DeJean made seven appearances for Iowa, mostly on special teams, totaling four tackles. He began as a starter in his sophomore year of 2022.

After recording seven tackles, a 14-yard interception return for a touchdown, and three 42-yard punt returns, he was voted the 2022 Music City Bowl MVP. After the 2023 season, he declared to enter the 2024 NFL Draft.
