He has also played for the Koln 99ers team based in Germany. Byars joined Oklahoma City Thunder in late September and recorded an average 4.1 points in pre-season. On 24 January 2008, he signed with Chorale Roanne Basket of the Ligue Nationale de Basketball in France. On 2 November 2009, he joined ALBA Berlin of Germany as the new small forward.

Then in 2010 NBA Summer League, Derrick Byars played for the Chicago Bulls. He signed a one-year contract with the Greek club Panellinios Basket in September 2010. He returned to France in August 2011, to sign a one-year contract with Cholet Basket but left the team only playing for two games.

On 10 December 2011, Derrick Byars signed with the Miami Heat but he was released from the team before the start of the season. Then he joined San Antonio Spurs but was released from the team on 21 August 2012 after playing two games. He resigned with the ALBA Berlin of Germany in November 2012.

In September 2013, he joined Memphis Grizzlies but was soon released from the team on 6 October 2013. After onwards, joined different teams like BC Krasny OKtyabr of Russia in January 2014, Belfius Mons-Hainaut in April 2012, Maccabi Rishon LeZion in September 2015, Santos de Aguada in January 2016, and JA Vichy of LNB Pro B in August 2016. On 27 February 2017, Byars joined Delaware 87ers of the NBA Development League and since then he has been playing from there.
