Karren realized that ‘life is too short’ and she decided to join Lord Sugar on the popular TV show called The Apprentice. Recalling those days of despair and hope post-surgery, Karren said honestly:

“I would never have done it had I not gone through the experience.

“It made me realise that you should try new things.”

The doctor’s advice and treatment

She was diagnosed with the condition in 2006. Her treating doctors told her that it indeed was a miracle that she had survived two deliveries with such a large and significant brain aneurysm sitting in her cranium ready to rupture any moment with raised intracranial pressure.

The doctors did not waste further time on her and operated her for her brain aneurysm within a week of the diagnosis. They did not want to wait for things to deteriorate and go out of hand before they took her up for surgery. She was lucky that the brain aneurysm was diagnosed in time and acted upon before any eventuality took place.

Karren had said at that time:

“They called to say the radiologist had discovered a brain aneurysm that could rupture at any time. I needed urgent treatment.”

Karren continued:

“The main risks were rupture during the procedure, bleeding or a stroke during surgery, which could leave me disabled or dead.

“I still have a five per cent risk of stroke which doesn’t sound a lot, but when you’re faced with it, it’s bloody awful.”

What does her husband Paul say?

Her husband Paul states that the knowledge of the illness and its treatment has indeed changed his wife completely. She used to worry a lot of unimportant things in her life and now post-surgery she has decided to take life easy and enjoy. He said:

“She’s less likely to get so fraught about the unimportant things that used to wind her up.”
