‘Fiddler on the Roof’ Actor Chaim Topol dies at the age of 87
Israel’s President Isaac Herzog has confirmed the passing of Chaim Topol, the actor famously known for his portrayal of Tevye the milkman in Fiddler On The Roof. He passed away on March 8, 2023, at the age of 87.
He was Oscar-nominated for his singing performance in the movie adaptation of the musical in 1971, and he also appeared in other well-known films such as Flash Gordon, Follow Me, and For Your Eyes Only.
Despite being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease some years ago, Topol remained a much-loved figure, and Herzog paid tribute to him, describing him as a talented actor who had won the hearts of many.
Topol is survived by his wife Galia, with whom he had three children, Anat, Ady, and Omer.
In recent days, Omer had spoken to Israeli media about his father’s illness, saying that despite the early stages of Alzheimer’s, Topol had still delivered memorable speeches and performances, covering up his problems with his remarkable acting skills.
Omer told an Israeli news outlet:
“When he won the Israel Prize, his Alzheimer’s was in its early stages. He spoke wonderfully at the ceremony, and also at other events, and no one even felt it.”

Omid Djalili, a British actor, and comedian, paid tribute to Topol. In 2017, Djalili played the same character as Topol during a production of the musical at Chichester Festival Theatre.
He posted on Twitter:
“Anyone who plays Tevye knows he can never top Topol. God rest his soul.”
Uri Geller, a television personality from Israel, expressed his condolences for the actor. He shared a photo of himself with the late star, along with former Israeli President Shimon Peres:
“So sorry to hear my friend #Topol has died. He was one of the first global Israeli celebrities and a very sweet and modest man. Deepest condolences to his family. To coin one of Fiddler’s most famous lines – To life, to life, l’chaim! Chaim Topol, we will miss you! ?”
Frozen actor Josh Gad also paid his tribute:
“There is no way to overstate how much this man and this performance meant to me. Topol is a large reason why I became an actor. In fact, his performance of Tevye in Fiddler was the very first performance I ever saw on a Broadway stage. RIP to a great.”
