Garrett Nichols and Taylor Garber are now engaged couples. The long-time couple announced to PEOPLE on Wednesday, February 1, that he and his girlfriend took a milestone step in their relationship.

The country singer, 26, got down on one knee in front of his four-year-old girlfriend on Tuesday, January 31, in a romantic spot at Stortorget, the older public square in Stockholm, Sweden.

He gushed about the engagement to PEOPLE,

“We have been together for a few years now and being in a place as beautiful as Sweden, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me to propose. We are so excited for this next step in our relationship!”

Nichols then went on to say that he was “definitely very nervous and on edge” the day and also intended to give a speech but it didn’t go as planned.

He expressed,

“I wanted to make sure it was perfect. I had a few things I wanted to say, but as soon as I got on one knee I forgot everything that I had planned to say… I completely blacked out and started crying. I was hoping to be really smooth and cool but I lost it when I started to propose. I couldn’t keep it together at all.”

Taylor, on the other hand, had “absolutely no idea” about the proposal. She said,

“I definitely went into shock, but it was the best moment I could have imagined for our engagement. I am so happy that we get to spend the rest of our lives together.”

The jewelry designer, 26, shared that the pair plan to move in together after returning from Sweden.

“We are looking forward to what life looks like as an engaged couple!”

The pair is presently on the Drunk or Dreaming Tour with Kane Brown alongside Garrett’s Restless Road bandmates Zach Beeken and Colton Pack.

The country star also shared the engagement news on his respective Instagram handle posting a series of pictures from their proposal moment.

The first photo of the series featured him getting down on one knee while Taylor’s facial expression can be seen as shocking. Similarly, he simply captioned the post,

“WE’RE GETTING MARRIED!”
“We are so excited to share with everyone that we just got engaged in Sweden. We are so thrilled that we found each other and that we get to spend the rest of our lives together. 4 years down, forever to go.”

He then concludes her statement by showing gratitude to PEOPLE for covering their beautiful moments.
