Gloria Borger and the Washington Women in Journalism Award

Gloria Borger is a master in her work. She is the senior political analyst and columnist of CNN network. Gloria has been working with them since 2007. Earlier, she was with the U.S. News & World Report, Newsweek, and CBS.

Gloria provides a deep insight into political events and breaking news of the day. She is seen on prime time programs of the network and has done several documentaries for the channel.

This year, Gloria was the recipient of the Washington Women in Journalism Award. This award recognizes popular outstanding women reporters and editors. Washingtonian helps sponsor the awards. Besides Gloria, Kelly O’Donnell, Jacqueline Alemany, and Asma Khalid won the award this year.

Gloria grew up in New Rochelle, New York. She always wanted to be a journalist. Talking about it, she said:

“I was a naturally nosy person. I was the editor of my high-school newspaper, and I became the editor of my college newspaper. Writing is what I love.”

Gloria and her first job and career achievements

Revealing her first journalism job, Gloria said:

“From college, I went to work at the Washington Star, which no longer exists. It was an old-fashioned afternoon newspaper and had some amazing journalists.”

And her first coverage was about the National Spelling Bee. She cannot recollect her first big story. But believes it to be about the Marvin Mandel trial. Marvin was a former governor from Maryland who was indicted. She elaborated:

“When you’re a young reporter, your most memorable journalism is when your editor comes out and says to you, ‘Can you get to X, Y, Z, because something is going on?’ and then running out of the newsroom and coming back with a story.”

The reporter enjoyed her work and has a lot of work to look back at and feel proud about. She did a documentary about Presidents who lost the elections. She stated:

“When you do profiles like that, you’re kind of peeling the onion of a personality that is larger than life. There’s just so much richness to these stories, and it was an honor for me to be able to tell their story.”

Gloria’s tip for upcoming journalists

Gloria has some advice for budding journalists. She shared:

“Do your homework. This is not a business you can skate in—you have to dig in to try and get it right.”

Gloria realized that the job is stressful but says:

“It can be a very stressful job because you strive to do great stories and to get them right. But storytelling is so important.”

The CNN employee wishes to see some changes towards betterment for women journalists. She said:

“We have to continue to have women not only on air but in management positions all over.”
