What is International Women’s Day?

International Women’s Day is an annual global holiday celebrated on March 8 which focuses on the women’s rights movement.  This day’s aim is to focus on grave issues like gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women.

This year’s theme for Women’s Day was “DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for gender equality”.

The theme emphasizes the importance of technology in advancing rights and also the growing digital gender gap that affects things like job opportunities women get and their online safety.

The UN noted that less than  259 million females have access to the Internet than males. Moreover,  women are also lacking in science, technology, engineering, and mathematical areas.

The UN says,

“Bringing women into technology results in more creative solutions and has greater potential for innovations that meet women’s needs and promote gender equality,”

“Their lack of inclusion, by contrast, comes with massive costs.”
