Hijab? Why are Sara Khadem and her husband settling in Spain?

Iranian Chess player Sara Khadem faces the risk of going to her country as she did not put on the hijab or headscarf.

She and her husband Ardeshir Ahmadi is reportedly planning to settle in Spain after photographs emerged of her taking part in an international tournament without a headscarf.

Sara Khadem, who ranked 804 in the world of Chess players and 10th amongst the Iranian players is not returning to Iran. Sources, Spanish newspaper El País cite the reasons being her tournament due to fear of reprisals.

Khadem and her husband are also planning to obtain residency in Spain. However, it is not clear whether they own a flat in the country yet or not.

Why is it risky for Iranian chess player Khadem to go to her country?

Iranian chess player Sara Khadem finds it unaccepting in her country to participate in a big event without a hijab.

She passed on a bold move apart from her Muslim culture, to show her bare head in the Fide World Rapid and Blitz Chess championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Sara, real name Sarasadat Khademalsharieh, 25 made headlines around the world as she appeared to play for a second day at the big Chess event without a hijab.

The pro chess player was in the string of sportswomen who have seemingly defied Iran’s strict dress code for women. They were then classified as anti-government protesters amidst the outrage that erupted in September 2022.

The woman sportsperson then demonstrated the nationwide rally for more than 100 days shortly after the death of Mahsa Amini. The Iranian-Kurdish woman was brutally murdered for not wearing their country’s compulsory hijab regulations.

As per the Oslo-based group Iran Human Rights, Iranian authorities have then arrested nearly 100 people. The anti-government campaign facing charges punishable by death.

Before Khadem, Iranian archer Parmida Ghasemi was seen without a hijab at an awards ceremony in Tehran. Similarly, the video went viral but Ghasemi said it was not a revolution she sought, it was just that she did not notice that her hijab had slipped.
