Isra Hirsi, eldest daughter of Rep. Ilhan Omar suspended from her college for anti-Israel protests!
Democrat Congresswoman, Ilhan Omar, 41 has three children. The eldest child, Isra Hirsi, 21 has been suspended from her college after she participated in an anti-Israel protest on Columbia University’s Morningside Heights campus.
Isra Hirsi and her college suspension
Isra Hirsi, 21 is the eldest child of Democrat Congresswoman, Ilhan Omar and her husband, Ahmed Hirsi. The young daughter is an environmental activist and was the coordinator of the organization that held several student-led strikes in the USA against climate change in 2019. She has also co-founded the US Youth Climate Strike which is the US arm of the global youth climate change movement.
Recently, she had taken an active part in anti-Israel protests that took place on Columbia University’s Morningside Heights campus. This did not go unnoticed and she faced a suspension from her college, the Barnard College, for her role in the protests. Isra posted the news about her suspension on her social media post on Thursday 18 April 2024. Her X post read:
“I’m an organizer with CU Apartheid Divest @ColumbiaSJP, in my 3 years at @BarnardCollege i have never been reprimanded or received any disciplinary warnings,”
“I just received notice that i am 1 of 3 students suspended for standing in solidarity with Palestinians facing a genocide.”
Isra defends her pro-Palestine stance
The young activist is not going to cower down and stands firm against the Israel for their strikes on Palestine. Isra put up a follow-up post in which she wrote:
“Those of us in Gaza Solidarity Encampment will not be intimidated. we will stand resolute until our demands are met.”
Further, her post continued:
“Our demands include divestment from companies complicit in genocide, transparency of @Columbia’s investments and FULL amnesty for all students f acing repression.”
The same day, during the protests, Isra and hundreds of other students at the peaceful demonstration were handcuffed and arrested for supporting Gaza. NYPD officers in riot gears had swept down on the campus and whisked away the protestors in their armed vehicles. The bystanders and fellow protestors shouted:
“Shame.”
And
“Let them go.”

But the police officers disregarded the shouts and escorted off the protestors from the campus. Columbia University President Nemat “Minouche” Shafik put up a statement in this matter. The statement given to ABC News read:
“This morning, I had to make a decision that I hoped would never be necessary,”
“I regret that all of these attempts to resolve the situation were rejected by the students involved. As a result, NYPD officers are now on campus and the process of clearing the encampment is underway.”
“I have always said that the safety of our community was my top priority and that we needed to preserve an environment where everyone could learn in a supportive context.”
Antisemitism on Columbia University Campus
Just one day before Isra’s suspension from her college, her mother, Ilhan Omar and others, who are part of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, had cornered Nemat. They posed questions to her about the rising antisemitism on the campus. Republican Rep. from North Carolina, Virginia Foxx had accused that Columbia University Campus harbors people with antisemitism.
She added that the college administration has done nothing much to curb this rising hate. But Nemat had assertively said:
“The college strives to be a community free of discrimination and hate in all forms and we condemn the antisemitism that is so pervasive today.”
