Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo is a world-famous Mexican drug lord.

Gallardo was one of the founders of the Guadalajara Cartel in the 1970s.

Felix was arrested n 1989 for the murder of Drug Enforcement Administration(DEA) agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena.

Moreover, he was living his 40-year sentence at the Altiplano maximum-security prison but was sent to a medium-security facility in 2014 due to his bad health.

Angel began working for drug traffickers brokering corruption of state officials, along with Rafael Caro Quintero and Ernesto Fonseca Carrillo taking control of the trafficking routes after Aviles was killed in a police shootout.

At the beginning of the 1980s, the Colombian cartels started to utilize Mexico as their primary trans-shipment point.

But at the end of the 1980s, the Guadalajara Cartel was led by Miguel Angel and had nearly monopolized the illegal drug trade in Mexico.

The plantations of marijuana were then raided and destroyed in 1984 by Mexican soldiers, backed by helicopters, and destroyed an even larger 1,000-hectare marijuana plantation called Rancho Buffalo in Chihuahua, Mexico.

Felix in response ordered the kidnapping of Camarena and on 7 February Jalisco police kidnapped Camarena as he left the U.S. consulate in Guadalajara.

His helicopter pilot, Alfredo Zavala was also kidnapped shortly afterward.

Gallardo kept his profile secret and his family also moved to Guadalajara in 1987.

However, the drug lord was arrested in Mexico on 8 April 1989 and was charged by the authorities in Mexico and the United States.

In the beginning, Angel was sentenced to 40 years of prison and after spending 28 years, he was a retrial and sentenced to an additional 37 years.

After his arrest, Felix decided to separate the trade he controlled as it would be more effective and have fewer chances to be brought down by law enforcement.

He was then sent to a high-security prison in 1993.
