At the 2023 Met Gala, Olivia Wilde and Margaret Zhang turned heads as they arrived wearing almost identical dresses in different colors. The event took place on Monday night at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and was held to raise funds for charity.
The Chloé frock that the two celebrities wore was based on a design created by Karl Lagerfeld four decades ago. This was in keeping with the theme of the night, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.”
Wilde wore a white version of the dress, while Zhang wore a black one with a ruffled skirt and cape featuring gold embellishments.
To complete their looks, Wilde wore warm highlights in her hair and accessorized with embroidered gold arm cuffs and chevron-shaped drop earrings. On the other hand, Zhang sported a blue long bob and black shades.
Both of the celebrities ended up seeing the fun side of it. The House actress wrote on her Instagram story a day after the Gala:
“Great minds”.
She added:
“If you’re gonna twin with anyone, make it Margaret Zhang.”
She shared a side-by-side image of her and Zhang wearing the matching frocks.
Zhang then shared her Instagram story on her own account and wrote:
“CUE THE STRINGS”.

Designer Gabriela Hearst explained that Wilde’s dress was based on a shorter one Lagerfeld had designed in 1983 and was inspired by a 17th-century Italian luthier named Nicola Amati who crafted a violin.
Gabriela told Vogue about the dress:
“What I loved about the original design was the musical inspiration of it, and the surrealistic touch on it. There was something quite timeless that we could bring back to the Met Gala in 2023. We made it a gala dress instead of a cocktail dress, and I think it worked beautifully.”
She then complimented Wilde:
“What I admire about Olivia is her intelligence, and that intelligence is paired with beauty. That combination is irresistible. I remember seeing her at an event [before the Met Gala] and seeing this energy in her eyes, and I thought, I would like to dress her.”
