In May 2020, while there was chaos in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the police arrested him live on air. He was covering the reaction to the hugely controversial death of George Floyd during the Twin Cities riots.

The police arrested him along with producer Bill Kirkos and camera operator Leonel Mendez.

There is no confirmation about why the police arrested him and his team. The three were arrested even though Omar had told officers to “put us back where you want us. We are getting out of your way.”

Although they did release them after about an hour, the subject became very controversial all over social media.

The police faced more backlash on social media sites for abusing power adding up to George Floyd’s death. More claims of racism followed and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz apologized to the president of CNN, Jeff Zucker for the incident.
