Who is Princess Sofia, Duchess of Värmland?

Princess Sofia of Sweden was a commoner who got married into one of Europe’s royal families.

It is no surprise for commoners to have a career before marrying someone from the royal family.

Queen Maxima of the Netherlands was a Wall Street banker. Queen Letizia of Spain was a broadcast journalist at ABC and CNN.

However, Sofia’s past is way different from anyone who’s ever married into a royal family. She was once a model who posed topless with only a snake wrapped around her torso.

But that could not stop her from making Prince Carl Philip fall in love with her.

Sofia was born in Daderyd in 1984 to a Swedish marketing manager mother and a Danish-Swedish father. She was one of three daughters of her parents.

The then-commoner completed an arts program at Vansbro Education Centre. With natural good looks and beautiful blue eyes, Sofia started modeling in her early 20s.

Why was Sofia’s past controversial?

During her modeling days, Sofia infamously posed for a magazine cover named Sltiz, a now-defunct Swedish men’s magazine where she posed in a pair of bikini briefs and a snake wrapped around her torso.

The infamous shoot led her to be cast in a reality show named Paradise Hotel.

Due to this, the majority of the public had a problem with her when her relationship with Carl was announced in 2010.

Sofia’s further education and career

After some time, Sofia left showbiz to pursue a life in New York City.

In 2005, she enrolled in an accounting program in the Big Apple where she had a job as a yoga instructor while specializing in business development.

She then undertook a course at Stockholm University.

Sofia’s relationship with Carl was confirmed by the royal palace in July 2010. While it is unclear where the two actually met, some say that they first crossed paths at a nightclub.

Nine months later, the couple moved in together in Djurgården of Stockholm. They continue to live there today in the Villa Solbacken with their children.

The royal’s relationship with Sofia made headlines for all the wrong reasons with one local publication even republishing her daring photos on their front page.

In 2018, Sofia recalled the hate and backlash she received during the initial stage of their relationship.

She said,

”People had opinions about me and my relationship, and more. It was very tough. People had comments on everything possible, on what I do and how I look.”

Despite all the backlash, the couple announced their engagement in June 2014. By the time of their wedding in June 2015, public sentiment had already shifted and they open-heartedly welcomed Sofia as a royal.

The two welcomed their first child, Prince Alexander in April 2016. They further welcomed two sons, Prince Gabriel, 5, and Prince Julian, 1.
