Why is Queen Margrethe of Denmark abdicating?

Queen Margrethe of Denmark made a surprise announcement on Sunday, December 31, that she intends to abdicate the throne on 14th January 2024.

During her traditional New Year’s Eve speech, the 83-year-old queen stated that her son, Crown Prince Frederik, would inherit the throne.

“I have decided that now is the right time. On 14 January 2024, 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father — I will step down as Queen of Denmark. I leave the throne to my son Crown Prince Frederik,”

For the previous 52 years, she has served as Denmark’s queen. She will commemorate the 52nd anniversary of her accession on January 14.

On January 14, 1972, Her Majesty took the throne after the death of her father, King Frederik IX. Following the 1953 Act of Succession, she became the first female heir to the Danish monarchy.

Similarly, she was honored in July as the Scandinavian country’s longest-reigning monarch after having ruled for more than fifty years

Queen continued in the speech,

“In 14 days I will have been Queen of Denmark for 52 years, Such a long time does not pass without a trace for any human being – not even me! Time wears on, and the ‘diseases’ increase. You no longer cope with the same things as you once could.”

Is Queen Margrethe struggling with some health problem?

The Danish Royal House published a statement in February 2023 stating that the Queen had undergone “extensive back surgery” that went “according to plan.”

“Her Majesty the Queen has today undergone extensive back surgery at the Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen. The operation went according to plan, and the Queen’s condition is good and stable under the circumstances,”

The statement continued,

“In the coming time, the Queen will continue to be hospitalized at the Rigshospitalet, and after that a longer period of convalescence and rehabilitation of the back awaits,”

Similarly, the procedure was disclosed two weeks ago by the palace, which noted that Queen Margrethe had a back problem. The Danish Royal House wrote,

“Her Majesty has been affected by back problems for a long period of time, and recently the situation has worsened, After consultation with the Rigshospitalet’s experts, the Queen has decided to undergo major back surgery.”

In her recent speech, the monarch disclosed that the medical operation “gave rise to thinking about the future — whether the time had come to leave the responsibility to the next generation”.
