Why are gray divorces rising in the world?
Gray divorce is defined as a divorce in couples over the age of fifty who had been married for many years. It is increasingly common to see such divorces in the world.
The reasons for this surge in gray divorces are multiple. Most important reason is that people are now living longer and healthier. Hence, they seek happiness even at those ending ages of life and are determined to procure it.
Moreover, societal norms and values are dynamic and changing. Women financial dependency is less common these days. They can navigate their way to happiness on their own and hence are willing to separate from a partner who is no more supportive or is unyielding.
Additionally, at this advanced age, children are grown up and they no more need financial assistance from their parents. Such divorces are devoid of custody battles and might be smoother.
However, like other divorces, gray divorce also might be hard with emotions flowing both ways. Societal expectations might also cause obstacles.
Though such divorces were also seen in the 1980s, they gained prominence in the early 2000s in the USA. And more and more older age couples are opting for it.
